Fund Our Future!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last month, Gov. Kathy Hochul presented her first Executive Budget proposal.\u00a0 It was a first in many ways \u2013 the first time a woman governor had delivered one, of course, but also the first budget since I\u2019ve been the president of this union that begins to take into consideration \u2013 and reward \u2014 the critical work performed by public employees.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t misunderstand me \u2013 the proposal is not perfect.\u00a0 But we are starting the budgetary process for the first time in more than a decade on very solid footing.\u00a0 She proposes no cuts to services or agency closures and in fact increases staffing by almost 2% statewide.\u00a0 In addition, she allocates billions to rebuild the healthcare workforce and leverages federal funding to support infrastructure projects throughout the state. Since our February issue published, we\u2019ve come out with eight PEF Budget Priorities and created letter-writing campaigns surrounding each of them.\u00a0 If you haven\u2019t participated yet, please do, and please share with your fellow members.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pef.org\/articles\/budget\/letters-weve-got-letters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"0\">You can find all the details on this page<\/a>.\u00a0 In this issue, <a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-40-no-1\/pef-to-legislators-support-parole-protect-public-safety\/\">we\u2019ve spotlighted one of those priorities<\/a> \u2013 parole officers and public safety.\u00a0 PEF supports the governor\u2019s \u201cJails to Jobs\u201d program she unveiled in her budget, but we\u2019re asking the legislature to expand it, as well as authorize hiring 500 more parole officers to deal with untenable caseloads.\u00a0 Read the full story here, which includes our recommendations to amend the \u201cLess is More\u201d law to empower parole officers and keep communities safe.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in this February update, I\u2019d like to call your attention to a <a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-40-no-1\/keeping-opwdd-running-takes-staff-and-commitment-to-clients\/\">roundup of interviews<\/a> conducted with PEF members who work at the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD).\u00a0 They sat down with us at the 2021 Convention to talk about how service cuts and short staffing have impacted their jobs.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/678276239\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"1\">We also produced a video<\/a>\u00a0using some of their replies and the words of two mothers who have loved ones in the OPWDD system who aren\u2019t getting the care they need.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, please take note of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pef.org\/articles\/education\/reminder-retroactive-reimbursement-deadline-is-march-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"2\">March 1 deadline for applying for retroactive tuition reimbursement<\/a>.\u00a0 And if you have kids interested in attending a DEC summer camp this year, check out our <a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-40-no-1\/educating-the-next-generation-of-environmental-stewards\/\">feature with PEF member Tom Shimalla<\/a>, who administers the camps.\u00a0 Last but not least, we\u2019ve updated the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/PEF-Communicator-Feb2022-1.pdf#page=32\">photo gallery<\/a>\u00a0in this issue with shots from around the Empire State this week.
