{"id":1500,"date":"2022-05-11T16:44:41","date_gmt":"2022-05-11T20:44:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/?p=1500"},"modified":"2022-05-27T11:13:22","modified_gmt":"2022-05-27T15:13:22","slug":"celebrating-pef-nurses-and-engaging-all-members","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-40-no-4\/celebrating-pef-nurses-and-engaging-all-members\/","title":{"rendered":"Engaging with members, celebrating PEF\u2019s nurses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_xmsonormal\">This update of the May issue of\u00a0<i>The Communicator<\/i>\u00a0comes after the first leg of our Statewide Officers Tour, which covered PEF regions 10-12 the week of May 16-20.\u00a0 We have lots of photos in this issue and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-40-no-4\/1568\/\">a brief summary<\/a> of the trip.\u00a0 It was great to meet so many PEF members face-to-face after more than two years of COVID restrictions!\u00a0 Overall, we met with about 700 members at 13 different events during the week and we\u2019re looking forward to visiting the rest of PEF\u2019s regions in the months ahead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_xmsonormal\">As another National Nurses Month comes to an end, be sure to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-40-no-4\/legislators-support-pef-nurses-call-to-boost-pay-staffing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"0\">check out our story on the PEF Nurses Day of Action<\/a>\u00a0held on May 10 at the State Capitol in Albany.\u00a0 I was joined by nurses from across the state and more than a dozen senators and members of the assembly who came out to voice their support for policy changes that will improve the working lives of all PEF nurses.\u00a0 We\u2019re asking the State to restructure nursing titles to make the profession more enticing, as well as end the obscene amounts of mandatory overtime nurses are forced to work under the current law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_xmsonormal\">Also in this issue, we have a brief\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-40-no-4\/shelby-wisneski-region-2-coordinator\/\">profile of new Region 2 Coordinator Shelby Wisneski<\/a>, who was elected in April to lead PEF\u2019s efforts in the Southern Tier.\u00a0 The next PEF Special Election will be in July, and I encourage members to get involved in your union. We are only as strong and engaged as our membership and as an organization we are committed to identifying future leaders so that PEF can continue to be a powerful force \u2013 in Albany, at every agency, and from Brooklyn to Buffalo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">One of those emerging leaders, Yamil Speight-Miller, <a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-40-no-4\/member-gathers-skills-and-effectiveness-with-every-challenge-met\/\"><span class=\"s1\">is profiled in this issue<\/span><\/a>. Yamil is an investigator at DOH, who did critical work during COVID and is involved with the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE). I\u2019ve worked with him in various capacities at PEF and each time I have come away impressed by his passion and commitment to the work at hand.
