Our union\u2019s Constitution mandates we hold a Convention every autumn and for the last eight years, I\u2019ve been honored to bang the gavel as your president.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The 44th Annual Convention took place Oct. 23-26, in Niagara Falls.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>About 500 delegates from agencies across the State attended to conduct the business of the union.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">This issue of <i>The Communicator<\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-40-no-8\/44th-annual-pef-convention-brimming-with-energy-action\/\"><span class=\"s2\">summarizes much of what was accomplished<\/span><\/a> \u2013 from the approval of two <a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-40-no-8\/delegates-amend-pef-constitution-pass-resolutions\/\"><span class=\"s2\">amendments to the PEF Constitution<\/span><\/a> to the debate over <a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-40-no-8\/delegates-amend-pef-constitution-pass-resolutions\/\"><span class=\"s2\">12 resolutions<\/span><\/a> proposed by officers and members to a variety of speeches by leaders in organized labor and state and federal politics.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Delegates also attended a slew of workshops covering everything from disciplinary hearings to <a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-40-no-8\/a-deep-dive-into-tackling-a-health-and-safety-objective\/\"><span class=\"s2\">health and safety<\/span><\/a> on the job to the Justice Center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">I am also writing to you just four days before the General Election.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Any member who didn\u2019t vote early, please <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pef.org\/articles\/news\/get-ready-to-vote\/\"><span class=\"s2\">make a plan to get to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 8<\/span><\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Depending on your work hours, your employer, New York State, must allot you enough time to cast your ballot, without charging accruals.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Please consult your HR or personnel office if necessary.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Your vote is your voice and it\u2019s critical that we do everything we can to elect pro-labor candidates who will respect and reward public employees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">I leave you with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=594269865822212\"><span class=\"s2\">this video of Convention delegates attempting to roll quarters into the tines of a fork<\/span><\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There was a lot of talk at Convention about how the union needs to attract younger members, so we had a little fun recreating a TikTok challenge for members after they sat down for interviews sharing what they do for New Yorkers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We\u2019ll be creating and sharing content from those interviews as the 2023 State budget cycle and our PS&amp;T contract negotiations begin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">In Unity,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Wayne Spence<br \/>\nPEF President<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PEF did it again!
