It\u2019s been a year of great accomplishments for PEF, but I\u2019ll spare you the full litany of the union\u2019s accomplishments until our year-end issue later this month.<\/p>\n<p>The theme of this issue is pretty clear from the cover \u2013 our strong union deserves a strong contract!\u00a0 The<a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-40-no-9\/meet-your-pst-contract-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-safelink=\"true\" data-linkindex=\"0\">\u00a0PEF Contract Team<\/a>, some of whom we introduce in these\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-40-no-9\/contract-administration-helping-your-contract-team-negotiate-the-best-contract-monitoring-implementation-and-enforcing-members-contractual-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-safelink=\"true\" data-linkindex=\"1\">pages<\/a>, has already had an introductory meeting with the State and scheduled two more meetings this month.\u00a0 You responded in force to our contract survey and the team will advocate for the priorities that members told them mattered most: Fair and increased compensation, an improved dental benefit, and telecommuting and alternative work schedules, to name just a few.<\/p>\n<p>A couple stories worth highlighting in this\u00a0<i>Communicator<\/i>\u00a0update: PEF resumed its participation in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-40-no-10\/pef-operation-first-book\/\">First Book initiative<\/a>\u00a0just after Thanksgiving, when I joined an AFT vice president, the OMH commissioner and the executive director of the Justice Center at Sagamore Children\u2019s Psychiatric Center on Long Island. It was amazing to see the smiles on kids\u2019 faces as they picked out books. We\u2019re looking forward to ramping up First Book across the state in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>I also want to point out the fine progress of leaders across the state, joined by our organizing department, in shattering our 2022 new member goals. PEF topped the list of public-sector unions signing up new members as part of SEIU\u2019s \u201cTogether We Rise\u201d initiative, bringing in nearly double our target by November! We are also making strides <a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-40-no-10\/your-union-is-making-membership-cope-strides-in-2022\/\">increasing member and retiree participation in COPE<\/a>, the Committee on Political Education, which is how we as a union contribute money to lobbying efforts at the federal level. Thank you to everyone who answered the call and began or increased their contribution.<\/p>\n<p>I hope everyone is enjoying the final month of this year.
