{"id":2488,"date":"2022-12-19T13:36:20","date_gmt":"2022-12-19T18:36:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/?p=2488"},"modified":"2023-01-13T15:30:22","modified_gmt":"2023-01-13T20:30:22","slug":"pef-did-it-in-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-40-no-10\/pef-did-it-in-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Full steam ahead in 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Happy New Year to the proud public employees of PEF!\u00a0 I hope you all found a moment during the holidays to reflect on the power of our union in 2022,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-40-no-10\/from-rallies-to-parades-to-meaningful-change-pef-was-on-the-move-in-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-safelink=\"true\" data-linkindex=\"0\">like we did in this year-ending issue<\/a>. From rallies to parades to in-person gatherings across the state, the union worked hard to protect your rights and keep you safe at work this year.<\/p>\n<p>2023 is off to a fast start and in this update before our February issue, we\u2019ve included quite a few new stories.\u00a0 I first want to draw your attention to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-40-no-10\/when-the-snow-hit-buffalo-pef-members-were-there-to-help\/\">PEF heroes of the Buffalo blizzard<\/a>.\u00a0 I was on the phone with agency commissioners when the storm hit and they all sang the praises of our members who pitched in to help out co-workers, many of them missing holiday celebrations with their own families.\u00a0 As always, I am humbled by the generosity shown by PEF members to New Yorkers in times of need.<\/p>\n<p>The Legislative Session is underway in Albany and to kick things off I was honored to attend this year\u2019s State of the State address, where\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-40-no-10\/pef-leaders-attend-key-state-events-as-new-legislative-session-begins\/\">PEF\u2019s political power was on display<\/a>\u00a0like never before.\u00a0 Among the PEF staff accompanying me on Jan. 10 were Legislative Director Patrick Lyons and Political Director Leah Gonzalez and I don\u2019t think we passed a single Senator or member of the Assembly who didn\u2019t recognize them by name. It is those sorts of relationships that make change possible in Albany.\u00a0 All of us in attendance were pleased to see so many of PEF\u2019s \u201cFund Our Future\u201d campaign themes echoed in the governor\u2019s speech.\u00a0 Be on the lookout in your email for how you can step up and help in our lobbying efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of stepping up, it is Special Election season for PEF seats on the Executive Board.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-40-no-10\/are-you-interested-in-a-leadership-role-nominating-petitions-for-special-elections-available-now\/\">There are 14 vacancies<\/a>\u00a0and I encourage anyone interested to get involved.\u00a0 Yes, it\u2019s a commitment \u2013 the EBoard meets four times per year for two days at a time, during which you earn EOL for your time away from your state job \u2013 but it is the policy-setting body that truly governs how this union runs in between our annual Conventions.
