And when you don\u2019t know what infection you have \u2013 accurate testing becomes critical.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Scientists at Wadsworth\u2019s Bacteriology Laboratory are behind the creation of numerous infectious disease molecular tests, including tests for <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">E. coli<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> shiga toxin, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bordetella pertussis<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Chlamydia trachomatis,<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> among more than a hundred others.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;An accurate diagnosis can be made rapidly, and patient treatment can begin earlier than if we wait for the organism to grow,\u201d said Halse, who supervised a unit of the Bacteriology Lab before retiring. \u201cMany organisms require special culture media, grow extremely slow, or may die quickly while being transported, which may result in a negative culture, ultimately leading to no diagnosis and thus no treatment, or worse, the wrong treatment.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Halse and fellow research scientists at Wadsworth developed and validated numerous molecular diagnostic tests to detect bacterial DNA in specimens. In 2006, she developed a molecular test for the detection of <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mycobacterium tuberculosis<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> complex (TB) DNA in respiratory specimens \u2013 work that earned her recognition in professional circles.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cOver the next 16 years, I continued to work on new molecular tests for TB diagnostics,\u201d Halse said. \u201cAs these tests were becoming recognized within the field, I was invited by the Association of Public Health Labs and Centers for Communicable Disease to teach other public health labs these tests in an annual workshop.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cMany other labs were using outdated technology that required more staff time and were more costly than the methods our lab was using,\u201d she said. \u201cToday, many labs both nationally and internationally use the same methods that Wadsworth Center uses.&#8221;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The tests are an integral part in combatting infectious disease.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cRapid treatment for patients with infectious diseases means quicker recovery and less transmission,\u201d Halse said. \u201cTB is particularly difficult to treat with standard drug regimens of four drugs for at least six months.
