{"id":3651,"date":"2023-08-30T09:30:54","date_gmt":"2023-08-30T13:30:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/?p=3651"},"modified":"2023-09-12T13:58:12","modified_gmt":"2023-09-12T17:58:12","slug":"pef-supports-governors-call-for-federal-assistance-during-migrant-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-41-no-7\/pef-supports-governors-call-for-federal-assistance-during-migrant-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"PEF supports governor\u2019s call for federal assistance during migrant crisis\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><em>September 12, 2023 &#8212;<\/em> In the past year, more than 100,000 migrants have been relocated from the southwestern border of the U.S. to New York State.\u00a0 Efforts to take care of these asylum seekers are ongoing by both the State and New York City, where a large number of the migrants are located. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To make sure the State can help the asylum seekers and New Yorkers going forward, Governor Kathy Hochul penned a letter to President Joe Biden on Aug. 24 requesting federal funds and resources to help with the crisis.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe City and State have provided significant funding, staffing and case management for these arrivals to date,\u201d Hochul wrote. \u201cI write to you today to express a most urgent need for the federal government to take executive action and direct significant financial assistance to address this challenge.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In her letter, Governor Hochul outlined four steps she believes would benefit New York the most.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">First, work authorizations, which would provide asylum seekers the ability to work legally in the United States. Second, federal financial assistance, which would include money for Healthcare, Transportation, Housing and Education. New York has already committed $1.5 billion to these efforts. Third, the opening of properties owned by the federal government for use as temporary shelters. And lastly, reimbursement from the federal government for deploying National Guard members from the state.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">PEF President Wayne Spence put out a statement in support of Hochul\u2019s letter to the President, and Hochul\u2019s call for aid.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAs an immigrant myself, I can\u2019t begin to imagine what these folks have been through and are now experiencing,\u201d Spence said. \u201cI support Governor Hochul\u2019s request to the federal government to do more.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Spence pointed out that the crisis is also impacting PEF Members. In August, a temporary housing opened at the Creedmoor Psychiatric Center in Queens, N.Y.
