So invested that they held a 48-hour fast to show their commitment!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Multiple unions, including PEF, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), New York State United Teachers (NYSUT), and United University Professions (UUP), all came out to show strong support for dozens of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityandstateny.com\/policy\/2014\/03\/fasting-to-save-suny-downstate\/181006\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\"> religious leaders and Brooklyn residents as they spent 48 hours, beginning March 9, 2014, fasting<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and praying on behalf of the medical center.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The clergy completed seven circuits around the block as a steady stream of patients entered the hospital. This year, PEF, UUP, other unions and the clergy marched and rallied and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-42-no-5\/pef-uup-nyc-clergy-bring-brooklyn-needs-downstate-message-to-washington\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">took the fight to Washington, D.C.<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> , to secure support from Rep.
