Contributions made to COPE are completely voluntary and not part of a PEF members\u2019 dues. And we are well on our way to doing just that.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">President Spence also detailed PEF\u2019s campaigns to keep SUNY Downstate open and to stand strong in the face of bullying at Kingsboro Psychiatric Center in Brooklyn.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The SUNY Downstate fight has been ongoing since PEF first learned about the State\u2019s plan to transition services from the state hospital to King\u2019s County Hospital in January. PEF immediately partnered with United University Professions (UUP) to form a coalition in order to make the case to elected politicians and the public how critical it is to the community that Downstate stay open.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That coalition \u2013 Brooklyn Needs Downstate \u2013 was able to halt the plan until at least April 1, 2025, when an advisory panel formed by the governor must issue recommendations on how to revitalize and sustain Downstate. Organized labor will have one seat on that panel.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In June, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-42-no-5\/pef-uup-nyc-clergy-bring-brooklyn-needs-downstate-message-to-washington\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">PEF and UUP traveled with local New York City clergy leaders to Washington, D.C<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. President Spence showed a video from the trip to the board. The group was able to quickly meet with U.S. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson one morning while having breakfast, and more formally with U.S. Rep. Last year the Convention was held in Syracuse, and it will be held there again next month, Sept. 15-18, 2024.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Corse-Johnson sent Requests for Proposals (RFPs) to areas across the state and five responded: Albany, Buffalo, Lake Placid, Niagara Falls, and Rochester. The federal agenda includes similar priorities, but also details support for transportation funding, the expansion of Medicare and national healthcare insurance, and the Protecting the Right to Organize (Pro) Act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The executive board also approved endorsements of state and federal candidates, as recommended by PEF\u2019s regional PACs and the SWPAC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cEndorsements are done on four levels,\u201d said Vice President DiAntonio. \u201cLocal, State (Assembly and Senate), the United States Congress and for President.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">PEF makes endorsements based on a candidate\u2019s record of service on issues that matter to PEF and organized labor, as well as their answers during interviews with the union\u2019s various PACs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">After approving endorsements for Congress, the State Assembly and the State Senate, debate began about PEF\u2019s presidential endorsement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">PEF Political Director Leah Gonzalez detailed for the executive board the labor record of both former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.
