{"id":5769,"date":"2024-09-24T14:48:24","date_gmt":"2024-09-24T18:48:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/?p=5769"},"modified":"2024-09-25T15:41:02","modified_gmt":"2024-09-25T19:41:02","slug":"moving-together-at-convention-and-in-the-year-ahead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-42-no-7\/moving-together-at-convention-and-in-the-year-ahead\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Moving Together\u2019 at Convention and in the year ahead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Welcome to our annual Convention issue, packed with information about all the speakers, workshops, and union business that was accomplished in Syracuse September 15-18!\u00a0 Nearly 600 delegates attended, and I heard from many of them how pleased they were with this year\u2019s event. I\u2019d like to thank Convention Committee Chair and Vice President Darlene Williams, as well as the entire Convention Committee and all the PEF staff who worked very hard to make sure delegates could accomplish their work and have a good time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-42-no-7\/keynote-speaker-mark-richard-inspires\/\">Keynote speaker Mark Richard<\/a>, who has been in the room with me for all four PEF contracts I\u2019ve negotiated as president, was a big hit, as was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-42-no-7\/convention-speakers-proud-of-pefs-unity-share-message-of-togetherness\/\">New York State Department of Civil Service Commissioner Timothy Hogues<\/a>, who was gracious enough to spend an extra half hour answering delegate questions following his remarks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The delegation considered\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-42-no-7\/moving-together-delegates-take-on-top-union-priorities-and-policies-at-46th-annual-pef-convention\/\">16 resolutions<\/a>\u00a0during the two-and-a-half-day Convention. The most pertinent for all members was a rejection of a proposed dues increase. PEF dues will remain at just 0.9% of your paycheck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">I attended every breakfast, workshop, and luncheon I could, including the annual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-42-no-7\/bee-involved-in-health-and-safety-at-your-worksit\/\">Health &amp; Safety Breakfast<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-42-no-7\/pef-veterans-committee-vows-to-leave-no-vets-behind\/\">Veterans\u2019<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-42-no-7\/pef-nurses-urged-to-heed-afts-code-red-initiative\/\">Nurses\u2019 Luncheons<\/a>, and this year,\u00a0 a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-42-no-7\/pef-multi-cultural-showcase-highlights-unions-diversity\/\">Multi-Cultural Showcase<\/a>\u00a0put on by our Jewish, Indo-American, and Caribbean Committees, as well as the PEF Black Caucus. It is an honor to lead such a diverse and talented group of professionals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">I\u2019d be remiss if I didn\u2019t add that our Convention rules leave room for hundreds more delegates, so if you\u2019re curious and want to get involved, pay attention to your personal email in the spring of 2025 for all the information about how to petition to become a delegate. It really is quite easy to get involved and make a difference in the future of your union. The 2025 Convention will be held in Lake Placid, N.Y., from Oct. 19-22, 2025.
