{"id":675,"date":"2021-10-15T08:57:18","date_gmt":"2021-10-15T12:57:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/?p=675"},"modified":"2023-02-14T10:49:55","modified_gmt":"2023-02-14T15:49:55","slug":"pef-was-a-strong-foe-of-less-is-more-legislation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-39-no-8\/pef-was-a-strong-foe-of-less-is-more-legislation\/","title":{"rendered":"PEF was a strong foe of \u2018Less is More\u2019 legislation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>May 28, 2021<\/em> &#8212; Recognizing its devastating impact on parole officers and their ability to do their job, as well as the risk to public safety, PEF worked hard behind the scenes to oppose the \u201cLess is More\u201d parole reform bill.<\/p>\n<p>Since the bill\u2019s introduction, PEF engaged in news media campaigns, submitted comments to major media outlets, covered the issue in union publications, sent emails to members urging them to contact their legislators, and lobbied hard in Albany.<\/p>\n<p>While DC 37 locals supported this bill, PEF sounded the alarm and supported the views of its parole members throughout the process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPEF was a powerful foe fighting against Less Is More,\u201d said President Wayne Spence. \u201cWe knew that proponents of this legislation simplified community supervision down to meet their needs and we carried the message of what parole and community supervision is really all about and how it works. On behalf of our members, we were in the ears of many key legislators trying to educate them on what was wrong with Less is More.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope our members will help us in our continuing efforts to shine light on this damaging bill,\u201d Spence said. \u201cWe ask that you all take a few minutes and reach out to your representatives. Tell them how this bill is a danger to public safety.
