{"id":6751,"date":"2025-03-03T15:04:28","date_gmt":"2025-03-03T20:04:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/?p=6751"},"modified":"2025-03-04T08:59:23","modified_gmt":"2025-03-04T13:59:23","slug":"march-comes-in-like-a-lion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-43-no-2\/march-comes-in-like-a-lion\/","title":{"rendered":"March comes in like a lion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Last month I began this message with a remark about the accelerated pace of our work in 2025 and as March roars in, I hope for all of us that it does indeed go out like a lamb.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I\u2019m thinking in particular of our union siblings who work for DOCCS and Corrections Based Operations at OMH. They have really stepped up to fill the gaps in service left by the corrections\u2019 officers who went on strike. When we got word on President\u2019s Day that they were being asked to perform security-related duties way outside their title, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pef.org\/crisis\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">PEF acted fast to negotiate an agreement with the governor<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> protecting their health and safety. Thousands of PEF members are still working 16-hour days or more, sacrificing time with their families to keep the State\u2019s correctional facilities operating. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I\u2019ve talked to <a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-43-no-2\/pef-in-the-news-8\/\">multiple media outlets <\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">throughout this crisis, emphasizing that as a union leader I understand why NYSCOPBA members felt they had no choice but to walk off the job to get the State\u2019s attention. But I hope for everyone involved \u2013 from PEF members to the corrections\u2019 officers to the incarcerated individuals \u2013 that a resolution is reached soon so all State employees can return safely to their jobs.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Meanwhile, the work of the State Legislature continues as they negotiate a State budget with the Governor. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-43-no-2\/pef-to-legislators-act-now-to-bolster-the-state-workforce\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">PEF Vice President Randi DiAntonio testified<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> late last month before the Joint Workforce Committee and the union held a well-attended <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-43-no-2\/lobby-day-legislative-reception\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Lobby Day and Legislative Reception<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> this week. I urge you to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pef.org\/articles\/budget\/letters-weve-got-letters\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">send digital letters<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to your local lawmakers supporting PEF\u2019s priorities. PEF Organizing will also have hard copies at all union events this month if you prefer to sign your name and we\u2019ll deliver the letters to lawmakers.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A couple other stories to point out in this issue of <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Communicator:<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> It\u2019s scholarship season for young men and women heading off to college in the fall, so keep an eye on our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pef.org\/about\/scholarships\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">scholarship page<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for the latest union opportunities. Council Leaders, please let us know about any division scholarships you\u2019re offering by sending a note to <\/span><a href=\"mailto:Communicator@pef.org\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Communicator@pef.org<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. And lastly, congratulations to Evelynn, chosen as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-43-no-2\/pef-members-daughter-is-this-years-celebrity-child-for-variety-kids-telethon\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cCelebrity Child\u201d<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for this month\u2019s Variety Kids Telethon in Buffalo.
