{"id":697,"date":"2021-10-18T10:17:23","date_gmt":"2021-10-18T14:17:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/?p=697"},"modified":"2021-10-18T13:24:19","modified_gmt":"2021-10-18T17:24:19","slug":"letters-to-the-editor-october-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-39-no-8\/letters-to-the-editor-october-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Letters to the Editor &#8211; October 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"p1\"><b>Hey PEF, back your parole officers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\">To the Editor:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">As many in the state may, or may not know, our job (of parole officer) is currently under siege by politicians and knee-jerk legislation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">As NYS parole officers, we are tasked with the supervision of violent felons upon their release from state prison facilities.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We work long hours and often find ourselves in dangerous situations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Since March of last year, our job duties, discretion and power have been slowly eroded.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There is now legislation awaiting the governor\u2019s signature that would, in Layman\u2019s terms, make it almost impossible to take these people out of the community when they are found in violation of supervision conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">While there were many rallies, signs and outcry for those on the inside, our union did nothing to attempt to garner support in our ranks and have our voices heard.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Instead, we were subject to the victory lap of the new contact by our leadership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">I ask. PEF, where are you?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><b>MATT CALLAGHAN<br \/>\n<\/b><b>Schenectady<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>Editor\u2019s note: <\/i><\/b><\/span><i>The writer is mistaken in assuming that PEF has done nothing to oppose the Less Is More legislation that Gov. Kathy Hochul has signed into law. PEF always has strongly opposed this and other bills in the Legislature and on the governor\u2019s desk that undermine the authority of parole officers and their ability to shepherd parolees while always protecting the safety of the public.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>PEF has repeatedly and vigorously lobbied and testified on these issues.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><b>What about retro pay for retirees?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\">To the Editor:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">I retired from the NYS Office of Mental Health<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>effective 4\/1\/2021 and I\u2019m wondering what the process is for retirees who are due retroactive<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>pay now that PEF has settled the PS&amp;T contract.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Since I am<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>no longer on the \u201cpayroll,\u201d but receiving retirement benefits, I assume I will not receive the retroactive pay when the active employees receive theirs in November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Thank you for your help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><b>CiINDY CRANDALL<br \/>\n<\/b><b>Rome, NY<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>Editor\u2019s Note: <\/i><\/b><\/span><i>The Office of the State Comptroller will calculate retroactive pay due to former state PS&amp;T employees who retired from state service after the 2016-19 contract expired April 1, 2019.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The OSC also will calculate if that retroactive pay affected the retiree\u2019s final average salary and the OSC will adjust the retiree\u2019s pension accordingly.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The OSC will begin this process for retirees after it completes making retroactive payments to current PS&amp;T employees in November.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Retirees do not need to request or apply to receive their retroactive pay or the adjustment to their pension.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><b>Support mask mandate<\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\">To the Editor:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">PEF should support the mask mandate, not oppose it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><b>ALLAN KOLODNY<br \/>\n<\/b><b>New York<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><b>Defend my right to live<\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\">To the Editor:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Once again, why are you, my union, defending people who will be endangering my health and life?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">If I have to work with a partner, or sit next to a co-worker who refuses to be vaccinated, I expect my union to protect MY rights to live and be healthy. Please stop defending these uninformed and, in my opinion, lazy people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Their right to die and get sick should not infringe on my right to live and be healthy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Do I have a right to drink and drive?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If I disagree with that law, would the union defend my rights?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>No, because it is a danger to myself and others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">There is no excuse, except a proven true medical excuse, for not being vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">As a union member, I want you to defend my right to live, rather than their non-existent rights to kill me or make me ill. This type of union activity is not why I stayed a union member.
