\"HealthOctober 28, 2025 —<\/em> The annual Health & Safety\u00a0(H&S)\u00a0Breakfast during Convention\u00a0on Oct. 21\u00a0started\u00a0with a 12-person game of \u201cTelephone,\u201d\u00a0driving home\u00a0the point\u00a0that oftentimes news that travels from person to person loses a lot along the way, leaving leaders with incomplete or incorrect information to work with at the health and safety table.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIsn\u2019t this what is happening all the time?\u201d\u00a0asked Article\u00a018 co-chair Leisa Abraham. \u201cWe\u2019re\u00a0not going back to the\u00a0source,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0hearing it from the last person, and we act on that final message. We really want to talk about the importance of communication.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the vendor area at Convention,\u00a0PEF Health and Safety\u00a0staff asked delegates to rate\u00a0communication, management commitment, union involvement, hazard reporting and fixing, training and knowledge, and H&S committees at their worksites as either positive or needs improvement.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCommunication was one of the biggest things we need to do better,\u201d Abraham said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fellow co-chair Gabriela Franklyn said follow-up is crucial.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of times our members will bring us the last message so we must take our time to investigate and do our due diligence to bring the facts to management so we can address issues in a timely manner,\u201d she said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Without correct information, little can be done to effect change.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really important to know what\u2019s\u00a0happening on\u00a0the ground,\u201d\u00a0Abraham said.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

PEF launched\u00a0a \u201cStop Workplace Violence\u201d campaign\u00a0this year, where staff and leaders do tabling events at worksites and share information with members on how to protect themselves and\u00a0what paperwork to obtain and fill out.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0not written down, what does management do? Nothing,\u201d said\u00a0Abraham.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the coming year, the H&S department and union leaders will continue tabling to educate members about workplace\u00a0violence, and\u00a0remains\u00a0committed to growing health and safety committees across the state.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to teach people to be advocates\u00a0in\u00a0the moment,\u201d Franklyn said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
