{"id":7964,"date":"2025-10-28T10:12:20","date_gmt":"2025-10-28T14:12:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/?p=7964"},"modified":"2025-11-05T10:59:32","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T15:59:32","slug":"governor-hochul-thanks-pef-members","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-43-no-9\/governor-hochul-thanks-pef-members\/","title":{"rendered":"Governor Hochul thanks PEF members"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7969 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/Hochul-Web.jpg\" alt=\"Hochul at the PEF 47th Annual PEF Convention\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/Hochul-Web.jpg 500w, https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/Hochul-Web-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/>October 29, 2025 &#8212;<\/em> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">New York State Governor Kathy Hochul took the stage on Day One of the PEF Convention\u00a0on Oct. 20, 2025, with one simple message:\u00a0Thank you.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe reason why your union and the work you do is so personal and important to me, is because of my record as a public servant,\u201d Governor Hochul\u00a0told the\u00a0nearly 700\u00a0delegates in Lake Placid. \u201cI was elected to serve\u00a031 years ago, and I know it is because of people like you\u00a0&#8212;\u00a0\u00a0the\u00a0hardworking, unsung heroes, that so many New Yorkers get to thrive.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The governor understands the frustrations of Tier 6, she said, because she knows the struggles all New Yorkers face as things get more expensive across the state and the country.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cOur costs continue to rise as inflation wreaks havoc\u00a0on\u00a0our lives. That is why my administration is countering the\u00a0sweeping\u00a0DOGE\u00a0(Department of Governmental Efficiency)\u00a0cuts made earlier this year,\u201d\u00a0she\u00a0said. \u201cWe\u2019re making it easier for federal workers who have lost their jobs to enter into state service instead.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Governor Hochul also\u00a0celebrated\u00a0a new unemployment benefit, one championed by PEF as well, which increases the historically low benefit from $540 per\u00a0week\u00a0to $869 per week.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAs more workers are laid off or on strike due to issues coming down from the federal government, these increases will keep those New Yorkers afloat as they try to find their way again,\u201d said Hochul.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Several pieces of legislation that made their way to Governor Hochul\u2019s desk were brought to the finish line by PEF.\u00a0In her address,\u00a0Hochul highlighted the\u00a0more than\u00a0$1 billion in funding for SUNY Downstate, the\u00a0$1 billion\u00a0in funding for\u00a0mental health and addiction services, and the\u00a0LOADinG\u00a0Act legislation\u2014which\u00a0compels agencies that use\u00a0Artificial\u00a0Intelligence to\u00a0disclose\u00a0when it is being\u00a0used, and\u00a0not displace workers.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAll of this legislation was made possible thanks to PEF and thanks to your caring and compassionate workforce,\u201d said Hochul. \u201cI know that you are committing yourselves\u00a0every\u00a0day\u00a0to being a part of making New York just a little bit better.
