{"id":8016,"date":"2025-10-27T09:23:16","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T13:23:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/?p=8016"},"modified":"2025-11-05T11:03:24","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T16:03:24","slug":"first-time-convention-delegates-surge-in-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-43-no-9\/first-time-convention-delegates-surge-in-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"First-time Convention delegates surge in 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8026 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/new-delegates-header.jpg\" alt=\"Delegates \" width=\"1200\" height=\"479\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/new-delegates-header.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/new-delegates-header-300x120.jpg 300w, https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/new-delegates-header-1024x409.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/new-delegates-header-768x307.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8022 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/NewDelegates.jpg\" alt=\"New Delegates\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/NewDelegates.jpg 550w, https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/NewDelegates-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/>October 29, 2025 &#8212;<\/em> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">PEF\u2019s\u00a047<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Annual Convention saw\u00a0nearly 700\u00a0delegates\u00a0take part\u00a0in\u00a0plenary sessions\u00a0and\u00a0workshops\u00a0at the\u00a0Olympic\u00a0Center\u00a0and various hotels around\u00a0Lake Placid.\u00a0More than\u00a0200 of those delegates\u00a0participated\u00a0for the first time.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We caught up with a few\u00a0of the\u00a0delegates\u00a0to get a sense of why they\u00a0chose to\u00a0join\u00a0the union\u2019s highest decision-making body this year.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI really want to help contribute and to\u00a0effect positive change within the union,\u201d said\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Aiesha Quick, a parole officer in Queens.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI\u00a0learned\u00a0a lot about the resolutions and the voting process.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Quick has been a PEF member for\u00a010\u00a0years and\u00a0has worked for\u00a0DOCCS for about\u00a0four\u00a0years.\u00a0She\u00a0is already involved in\u00a0Health and\u00a0Safety and\u00a0Labor-Management meetings at her office and felt that attending\u00a0Convention\u00a0would be a chance to meet new members.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Adam\u00a0Warrenchak\u00a0is a\u00a0Contract Management Specialist\u00a0with the Office of the State Comptroller\u00a0in Albany.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0He has been a PEF member for\u00a0seven\u00a0years and with the Comptroller\u2019s Office for about\u00a0two-and-a\u00a0half-years. He\u00a0was recently elected to\u00a0the PEF Executive Board.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cConvention is where the entire membership really has a voice,\u201d he said. \u201cI wanted to be here because\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0one of the rare times when so many PEF members from across the state come together. It is a chance to hear different perspectives, share concerns from my division, and learn from others who face different challenges.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Joseph Moynihan\u00a0works at the Department of Veterans Services\u00a0in Buffalo<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. He is also an\u00a0Executive\u00a0Board member.\u00a0As a board member, he was familiar with\u00a0parliamentary procedure and PEF\u2019s adherence to Robert\u2019s Rules of Order, but with hundreds of other delegates in the room, the rules looked\u00a0very different.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI did not recognize how big the scale was going to be, so it was definitely a new experience to\u00a0recognize just how many people are involved in this process, as well as the sheer consolidation of everyone throughout the state,\u201d he said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">First-time delegates had the goals of their members from their home regions in mind as they traveled to Lake Placid.\u00a0For<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Sandy Darby-Roberts, an Employment Counselor with the Department of Labor in Region 11<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the contract was top of mind for her\u00a0constituents.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cEveryone is worried about raises and the federal cuts. Those were some of the\u00a0major issues\u00a0that my members were concerned about,\u201d said Darby-Roberts.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She was given some hope after hearing about New York\u2019s\u00a0ability to absorb\u00a0some of the impacts from those cuts from speakers\u00a0at\u00a0convention.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI think it\u2019s great, the fact that there\u2019s a\u00a0little bit of a cushion\u2014my grandma would always say that it\u2019s good to keep a little something for a rainy day\u2014so it\u2019s great that we have that\u00a0to lean on,\u201d\u00a0she said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Moynihan feels the\u00a0same but\u00a0added that he\u00a0thinks\u00a0the state has the back of both state and federal workers\u00a0during this unprecedented time.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThere are obviously some concerns with federal deficits affecting us in the state, but from what I have heard over the last couple of days, I feel pretty confident we\u2019ll be able to weather that,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd then make sure we still have the necessary steps in place to\u00a0ensure safety, welfare, fair wages and respect for our workers.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Each delegate said that they learned a lot and even had\u00a0some\u00a0fun at\u00a0Convention.\u00a0Quick said although she\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0get too involved on the convention floor, she looks forward to coming back next year.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI think it was\u00a0an absolute fabulous experience, I learned so much about Robert\u2019s Rules of Order,\u00a0I did candle making, we had boots on the ground\u2014there were\u00a0so many other activities to do\u2014it was a great experience, and I would definitely do it again.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Warrenchak\u00a0hopes that\u00a0even\u00a0more people\u00a0get\u00a0involved\u00a0next year when\u00a0Convention\u00a0takes place in Niagara Falls.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe union is only as strong as its members,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen more people get involved, we get more perspectives\u00a0and\u00a0stronger decisions. Even if someone\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0run for a delegate or board seat, attending meetings or\u00a0helping on\u00a0a committee makes a difference. The more members we have engaged, the more power we have at the bargaining table and in shaping our future.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Editor\u2019s Note: The 48<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0PEF Convention will take place Oct. 18-21, 2026, in Niagara Falls.
