{"id":9139,"date":"2026-06-09T09:30:15","date_gmt":"2026-06-09T13:30:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/?p=9139"},"modified":"2026-06-11T14:22:38","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T18:22:38","slug":"qwl-grants-boost-morale-provide-worksites-with-appliance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-44-no-5\/qwl-grants-boost-morale-provide-worksites-with-appliance\/","title":{"rendered":"QWL grants boost morale, provide worksites with appliance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8578 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/03\/Value-Feature.jpg\" alt=\"VALUE OF THE UNION: Pay increases a big win for special ed assistants at School for the Deaf, School for the Blind\" width=\"360\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/03\/Value-Feature.jpg 640w, https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/03\/Value-Feature-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/>June 12, 2026 &#8212;<\/em> Through Article 14 of the\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pef.org\/pef_files\/files\/pdf\/20232026CBA.pdf#page=53\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">PS&amp;T contract<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, PEF divisions can apply for a grant of up to $1,250 per year for certain kitchen appliances to improve breakroom\/lunch areas at facilities that do not have them or where they aren\u2019t in good working order.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Quality of Work Life (QWL) Grants Program is a reimbursement program that can be used to pay for coffeemakers, microwaves, or refrigerators; the size, type, and quantity is determined by the number of employees served at a specific location.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI\u2019ve had members reach out to our Division for help in purchasing coffee makers, microwaves, and refrigerators,\u201d said Division 344 Council Leader Josephine Slifka at Central New York Psychiatric Center (CNYPC) in Marcy. \u201cI called PEF and found out immediately about the QWL program. Our members need these appliances to make work life more pleasant, more like home, and boost morale.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Slifka said some worksites had no appliances and others had broken ones.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cSince we started applying and receiving these items, more PEF members are coming forward to request these items for their offices or departments,\u201d she said. \u201cThis program is invaluable to our members. They are thrilled to have coffee in the morning and throughout the day, a place to heat their food, and a place to safely store their food.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Members at CNYPC tell Slifka they hope the program adds toasters to the eligiblily list in the future!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Any PEF member can access the grant guidelines <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pef.org\/pef_files\/docs\/pdf\/PEFQWLGrantProgramGuidelines2025.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and the application <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pef.org\/pef_files\/docs\/pdf\/PEFQWLGrantProgramApplication2025.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. New forms for 2026 are not yet available from the Office of Employee Relations, but OER will stil honor last year\u2019s forms.
