{"id":9212,"date":"2026-07-02T08:25:12","date_gmt":"2026-07-02T12:25:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/?p=9212"},"modified":"2026-08-07T09:52:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T13:52:21","slug":"understanding-sick-leave-credit-at-retirement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-44-no-6\/understanding-sick-leave-credit-at-retirement\/","title":{"rendered":"Understanding sick leave credit at retirement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9228 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/07\/SickLeaveCredit-Web.jpg\" alt=\"Understanding sick leave credit at retirement\" width=\"385\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/07\/SickLeaveCredit-Web.jpg 450w, https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/07\/SickLeaveCredit-Web-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 385px) 100vw, 385px\" \/>August 7, 2026 &#8212;<\/em> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sick leave credit changes proposed in the tentative 2026-2031 PS&amp;T agreement would be based on a 2015 life expectancy table, rather than the current 1999 tables, for employees retiring on or after Jan. 1, 2027.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What does that mean\u00a0for\u00a0you?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sick leave credit is the actuarial value of your monthly sick leave credit, calculated at the time of retirement, and used to offset the monthly cost of your New York State Health Insurance Program (NYSHIP) premium.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">People are living longer, and with the updated life expectancy tables,\u00a0the value of your\u00a0sick leave at retirement\u00a0will be\u00a0less.\u00a0Your\u00a0calculation is\u00a0different depending on your\u00a0salary and the\u00a0hours\u00a0you work each week.\u00a0\u00a0Your hourly rate of pay includes annual salary plus\u00a0additional\u00a0factors such as location pay, shift or geographic differential,\u00a0and inconvenience pay.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As an example:\u00a0A member with\u00a0a total annual salary of $90,000; the\u00a0maximum\u00a0200 days, or 1,600 sick leave hours\u00a0accrued; and a\u00a040-hour workweek\u00a0(8 hours a day), would\u00a0earn\u00a0a sick leave credit of $68,960. This equates to $204.63 under the current\u00a01999\u00a0life expectancy\u00a0table\u00a0and $182.43 under the proposed 2015 table \u2013 a difference\u00a0of $22\/month if retiring at age 55. Retirement at 65 would equate to $286.14 a month under the old tables and $248.95 under the proposed \u2013 a difference of $38 a month.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While PEF wants members to be aware of this pending change in how sick leave credit will be calculated if the contract is ratified, members should keep in mind that the across-the-board raises they earn each year of the contract will also\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">increase<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the value of each hour of sick leave, since their wages will be increasing year over year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You can calculate your own sick leave by visiting\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.ny.gov\/employee-benefits\/login\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">www.cs.ny.gov\/employee-benefits\/login<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(this currently reflects the 1999\u00a0tables, but\u00a0will be updated if the contract is ratified).\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For more information,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ugWp2o2XpJY\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">watch\u00a0this\u00a0video<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0about calculating\u00a0sick leave credit.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>August 7, 2026 &#8212;
