PEF delegates were honored to meet Dolores Huerta, center, who co-founded the United Farm Workers and was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from AFT for her decades of work devoted to civil rights, workers’ rights, and public education.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

August 7, 2026 —<\/em> The 2026 AFT Convention was held July 16-19, in Washington, D.C. It was the union\u2019s largest in 15 years, with 3,500 delegates. PEF President Wayne Spence, who is also an AFT Vice President, led PEF\u2019s delegation, which included all three vice presidents as automatic delegates (Randi DiAntonio, Bruce Giddings, and Darlene Williams), as well as 18 elected delegates from PEF and seven guests who represented the union.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

President Spence had a packed schedule during the multi-day gathering,\u00a0hosting the AFT Civil & Human Rights Committee luncheon as\u00a0chair\u00a0and delivering opening and closing remarks, as well as attending meetings of the AFT Executive Committee, Executive Council,\u00a0and Convention Committee. In the evening, receptions were held\u00a0at the National Museum of African American History and Culture and in support of\u00a0<\/span>COPE<\/span><\/a>, the political action committee that raises money to support lobbying for organized labor\u2019s priorities at the federal level.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe AFT Convention takes place every two years and is always an exciting time, but it is very busy,\u201d said President Spence. \u201cOver the years, PEF leaders and members have\u00a0stepped up to\u00a0help with\u00a0various aspects of AFT\u2019s work, and it\u2019s gratifying to see PEF recognized as a leading public sector union in the AFT.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

PEF authored\u00a0four\u00a0resolutions for\u00a0Convention\u00a0delegates\u00a0to consider. Three were debated and\u00a0passed,\u00a0and one did not reach the floor.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

PEF VP Randi DiAntonio\u00a0introduced\u00a0a resolution titled\u00a0<\/span>Fight for Affordability and Improved Quality of Life<\/span><\/a>, which concludes \u201c<\/span>AFT will use every tool at our disposal\u2014political action, legislative advocacy,\u202fmedia campaigns and grassroots organizing\u2014to ensure AFT members can build financial security and share fully in the prosperity of the nation they serve.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She\u00a0also spoke on behalf of\u00a0a resolution called<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Advancing Union-Backed Housing Models for AFT Public Sector Members<\/span><\/a>, which PEF supported through its work\u00a0in the AFT Public Employees Division. The resolution calls on AFT to recognize housing affordability and access to homeownership as a \u201ccore labor, economic justice and workforce sustainability issue for public sector members.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

PEF VP Darlene Williams\u00a0addressed delegates\u00a0on behalf of the third resolution,\u00a0<\/span>AFT Members Refuse to Accept Violence as Part of the Job<\/span><\/a>. Based on PEF\u2019s years-long advocacy against\u00a0workplace violence, the resolution commits AFT to\u00a0a variety of mitigation efforts \u2013 including the creation of\u00a0a workplace violence reporting tool\u00a0and\u00a0working with federal legislators to deliver a Government Accountability Office study on the impact of workplace violence across all the divisions AFT represents \u2013public services,\u00a0healthcare and education.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Delegates also had the opportunity this year to\u00a0participate\u00a0in a\u00a0<\/span>Day of Service<\/span><\/a>, which involved a trip to the\u00a0historic Shiloh Baptist Church. They distributed 5,000 books and 500 backpacks to students, as well as essential food and hygiene items for people facing affordability challenges or experiencing homelessness. The\u00a0effort supported eight public schools and\u00a0numerous\u00a0after-school programs, ensuring local families have the resources they need.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cIn the same space where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. shared his words of empowerment with the community, we experienced the true meaning of Union leadership and power: which for me is to be of service to others,\u201d said delegate Vivian Falto, who also chairs the PEF Hispanic Committee. \u201cThe Day of Service really showed what organized labor can do when it works together.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Delegates were equally busy during the General Sessions of the Convention, which saw AFT celebrate the years-long fight to save SUNY\u00a0Downstate\u00a0in Brooklyn, and the multi-union coalition that fought\u00a0for\u00a0and won significant reforms to Tiers 5 and 6 of the New York State pension\u00a0plan. President Spence\u00a0addressed the delegates about both major wins, which never would have happened without\u00a0PEF\u2019s leadership and contributions to\u00a0coalitions of clergy, community\u00a0leaders\u00a0and organized labor.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>PEF Vice President Darlene Williams was also honored during the Women\u2019s Rights Breakfast on the final day of the Convention with a Living Legacy Award for her 40 years of\u00a0commitment to organized labor.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The next AFT Convention will be held in Portland, Oregon, in July 2028. PEF members in AFT-represented titles may petition to be\u00a0a delegate. Instructions\u00a0regarding\u00a0the process will be communicated to eligible members and posted on the\u00a0<\/span>PEF elections page<\/span><\/a>\u00a0at a later date.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
