Over the years, members who work at the facility have faced\u00a0increasing\u00a0workplace\u00a0violence at the hands of the patients they serve.\u00a0Although PEF has been working with the Office of Mental Health (OMH)\u00a0to address issues, the meeting between members and the Senator\u00a0was scheduled\u00a0to\u00a0provide\u00a0further support.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">PEF members shared stories of hazardous working conditions, violence against staff, and other issues that\u00a0contribute\u00a0to Pilgrim having one of the highest instances of workplace violence\u00a0among\u00a0Office of Mental Health (OMH)\u00a0facilities.\u00a0Nurses, social\u00a0workers,\u00a0and other PEF health professionals\u00a0attended. A major concern\u00a0expressed was the frequency at which\u00a0members\u00a0are forced to work alone with patients who are threatening them or who return to the facility after\u00a0multiple\u00a0violent and criminal offenses.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ivan Giannou is a Registered Nurse at Pilgrim\u00a0and the Council Leader for PEF Division 233 at the facility. He said that\u00a0management\u00a0needing to take workplace violence more seriously an issue.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhile the OMH statewide leadership has encouraged local health and safety committees to have regular workplace violence meetings, this\u00a0facility has repeatedly stated they will only have one meeting per year,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Giannou. \u201cWorkplace violence reports are most useful when the information can be looked at for trends to address in real-time, not to serve as historical documents and looked at by the hundreds once a year by committee members.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For PEF and the Senator, the goal is the same:\u00a0Ensure\u00a0that members have the support they need to continue to do the work that needs to be done for New Yorkers without\u00a0fearing\u00a0for\u00a0their safety.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;Those who treat patients suffering from a mental health crisis mustn\u2019t be forced to choose between helping those in distress and their personal safety,\u201d said Senator Martinez.\u00a0\u201cGoing to work must come with an expectation that you\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0be assaulted during your shift. I stand with the PEF nurses who do difficult work, in frequently challenging and sometimes dangerous conditions, to demand that their safety be protected.&#8221;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">PEF member Bahiyya Baskerville, who works at one of Pilgrim\u2019s outpatient clinics as a social worker,\u00a0left\u00a0the meeting with a\u00a0sense\u00a0of\u00a0hope.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8220;I appreciated the opportunity to meet with Senator Martinez,\u201d said Baskerville. \u201cShe listened with compassion and sincerity, making everyone feel heard and respected.\u00a0It was a refreshing and hopeful conversation that left me feeling encouraged and optimistic about the possibilities that come through open dialogue and collaboration.&#8221;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Council Leader\u00a0Giannou\u00a0agreed.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cStaff understand there are inherent risks working in mental health, but we&#8217;re here to help people, not be attacked by individuals who feel there are no consequences for their actions,\u201d he said. \u201cI believe there\u00a0is some forward momentum from the meeting, as the\u00a0Senator was very receptive to all our concerns.
