They perform social work and program assistance with formerly incarcerated individuals to help keep them on a positive trajectory as they detach from the correctional system. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But sometimes things do not go as planned, and a parole officer must respond to a violent crime that results in injuries. When that happens, they are often without the tools they need to perform life-saving aid either on those they serve, or in some cases, themselves.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9674\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9674\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9674\" src=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/Dunham-distributing-a-pack.jpg\" alt=\"Region 6 Coordinator Christopher Dunham distributed &quot;tac-packs&quot; to PEF parole officers on Aug. 21.\" width=\"400\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/Dunham-distributing-a-pack.jpg 500w, https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/Dunham-distributing-a-pack-300x195.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9674\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Region 6 Coordinator Christopher Dunham distributed &#8220;tac-packs&#8221; to PEF parole officers on Aug. 21.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe often have to encounter individuals who are engaged in criminal activity, whether it is in their homes or in public places,\u201d said Senior Parole Officer Cosmo Pellegrino.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That&#8217;s why Pellegrino and his fellow officers <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">advocated for further medical assistance and training, and when he brought up the idea with PEF Region 6 Coordinator Chris Dunham, Dunham took action.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhen Cosmo informed me that the State of New York was not adequately equipping its parole officers with sufficient medical supplies for injuries that can and will happen in their line of work, I was shocked to say the least,\u201d said Dunham. \u201cSomething had to be done to protect our parole officers.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dunham tapped the Region 6 health and safety budget to purchase medical supplies used to create a \u201ctac-pack\u201d for parole officers. Tac packs are small portable kits that hold things like tourniquets, field dressing, gloves, and other supplies. The name refers to the fact that they can be deployed &#8220;tactically&#8221; during an emergency.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cEvery cost-effective avenue was considered without compromising quality and durability for field use,\u201d said Dunham.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dunham and Pellegrino introduced the tac-packs to grateful parole officers at their monthly meeting on August 21.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The next step is to ensure that each parole officer knows exactly how to use what is inside. Although officers receive in-service training on some basic first-aid, Pellegrino said additional training is crucial.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe already receive Officer Safety and Survival Training. There is a very short module on how to properly apply a tourniquet and utilize combat gauze,\u201d said Pellegrino. \u201cChris and I have plans to reach out to a program at Oneida County called Stop the Bleed where certified instructors come and teach you how to utilize all the gear in the bag.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Both Dunham and Pellegrino are certain that this is only the beginning for parole officers in Region 6 and across the state.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt is our hope that this ultimately kickstarts an initiative where every parole officer across New York State will receive this equipment and training,\u201d said Dunham. \u201cThey all deserve to be similarly equipped so that they can save a life or, God forbid, their own.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>September 15, 2026 &#8212; PEF parole officers across the state supervise people who are serving out the remainder of their sentences in the community.
