{"id":9692,"date":"2026-09-07T08:47:13","date_gmt":"2026-09-07T12:47:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/?p=9692"},"modified":"2026-09-14T10:47:23","modified_gmt":"2026-09-14T14:47:23","slug":"celebrating-workers-rights-on-labor-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/issue\/volume-44-no-7\/celebrating-workers-rights-on-labor-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating workers\u2019 rights on Labor Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-9699\" src=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/09\/Larbor-Day-Logo.jpg\" alt=\"Labor Day \" width=\"337\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/09\/Larbor-Day-Logo.jpg 600w, https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/09\/Larbor-Day-Logo-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 337px) 100vw, 337px\" \/>September 15, 2026 &#8212;<\/em> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">From the nearly 1,000 members in Region 8 flocking to a minor league baseball stadium, to what many are hailing as the highest turnout ever at the celebration in Buffalo, PEF members made a strong showing at Labor Day events across the state.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Region 1<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Excitement was palpable at Cazenovia Park in Buffalo, said Region 1 Coordinator Vincent Cicatello.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThis year may have been the biggest turnout in 20 years, and people took notice that many more PEF members came out this year than in years past,\u201d he said. \u201cIt warms my heart knowing we are reaching out and getting new members involved. We had about 70 people, families came out, and there was so much energy.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Cicatello said the day was full of food, fun, and camaraderie.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cFellow union members, politicians, community leaders, we all came together and focused on labor, the fight of workers every day in the workplace, health and safety, fair pay, and more. Region 1 is proud to be part of the Western New York and New York State labor movement.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The region was also an event sponsor. Cicatello credited rising membership for the ability to get involved and contribute to more local events.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Region 3<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>PEF members took to the streets of Rochester to participate in the Labor Day parade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegion 3 had about 100 members, retirees and family members show up to the Rochester parade to support PEF and Labor,\u201d said Regional Coordinator Leisa Abraham. \u201cOur members and their families spread union messages, candy, and goodwill to the parade watchers as we walked to the Rochester ballpark to enjoy a lunch, family activities, and a ballgame! Special thanks to all our members, retirees their families for turning out on a holiday, and of course our region 3 PEF staff whose efforts and time made it all work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Region 4<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Labor Day is the traditional last day of the New York State Fair in Syracuse, and it draws union families from across the state. The Region\u2019s booth in the Center for Progress building welcomed hundreds of visitors, PEF members, and PEF retirees.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt was an amazing 13 days at the great New York State Fair,\u201d said Region 4 Coordinator Monica Moore. \u201cI enjoyed connecting with members and retirees from Region 4 and around the state. I advocated for PEF members and urged fair attendees to register to vote and make their voices heard this November. It was a huge success!\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Booth visitors could participate in a visual display that showed the diversity of PEF titles by placing a leaf on the \u201cRooted in Solidarity\u201d tree.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe had an overwhelming response and we ended up at the end of the 13 days in full bloom,\u201d Moore said. \u201cThank you to all the members and retirees for stopping by the booth &#8211; it was great engaging with all!\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Region 7<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Solidarity Parade and Picnic in Massena drew members from several unions, including 1199SEIU, NYSUT, IBEW, NYSNA, CSEA, and AFGE, to name a few.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe had an amazing turnout by both PEF members and other local unions,\u201d said Region 7 Coordinator Barbara Stransky. \u201cThe day was spent marching in solidarity then a family picnic. Labor is strong in the North Country.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Region 8<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">More than 950 members of Region 8 celebrated Labor Day at the Capital District Area Labor Federation\u2019s family-friendly event at Joe Bruno Stadium in Troy, N.Y., said Region 8\u00a0 Coordinator Danielle Bridger.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cPEF was a clambake sponsor, and our members made up almost 50% of the total 2,000 union members and families that attended,\u201d she said. \u201cThe event was free for union members and their families, but we asked all that attended to being a nonperishable item for donation to the food bank.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9702 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/09\/Labor-Day-Grid.jpg\" alt=\"2026 Labor Day parade photos\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/09\/Labor-Day-Grid.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/09\/Labor-Day-Grid-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/09\/Labor-Day-Grid-1024x580.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/communicator.pef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/09\/Labor-Day-Grid-768x435.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>September 15, 2026 &#8212;
